The Purple Foot Direct Read Acid Tester: We developed this easy to use acid test kit in the 1980's but never marketed it outside of Wisconsin, until now. The principle is simple: acids in wine mix with regular household baking soda (like Arm & Hammer) to produce a gas that pushes a column of water up a precisely calibrated scale. This scale is calibrated to express the total acid in terms of Tartaric acid. It's easy to use, accurate when used properly, and the only chemical needed is baking soda which can be purchased at any local grocery store!
